SIGs for May 5
Wednesday Night Community VC led by Eric
Gersh We'll continue our discussion about forming a fund for raising and distributing
capital to community members for community related net biz and projects. Topics include:
setting a representative working name for the fund, deliberations on Profit/Non Profit
status and defining the general criteria for a qualifying project.
Burning Man Countdown. Burning Man -
The Most Dangerous Art Event in the World, will talk about planning our own unique
participation. This week we will be joining with the SRL SIG. SRL has been active at
Burning Man, and the two groups share an "extreme art" approach to their
activities, so we think it will be a good mix.
Survival Research Labs led by Jim
Moulton & Marshall Rockwell. SRL is a progressive performance art group out of the bay area that
uses large remotely controlled robotics devices to create an amazing visual and auditory
cacophony of epic proportions. Their last performance occurred in Los Angeles during the
mid-80's. This SIG is committed planning their return to LA. The SRL Performance is
scheduled for August 1999, to coincide with Siggraph. At this
meeting we will show a 10 Minute (A-) Robotics Video; pass out copies of the performance
requirements and have a variety of press releases to review. We will also discuss having
an official kick-off party for the event.
Getting LAP Ready for Today's Challenges led by Max Gail. For four plus years, Max Gail has been sharing
the LAP concepts of sustainable community through universal access to information
technologies, collaborative entrepreneurial processes, life-long learning and celebration
of diversity. Following recent events in Colorado, many government, education and business
leaders across the country contacted Max wanting to meet online in recognition of a
collective community crisis. The purpose of the SIG is to get the LAP website ready to address this wave of urgency with up to
date conferencing &/communication tools.

Kapes The Internet can be a great tool to bridge distances between people.
Join us and see how you can connect to friends and family all over the world. We
will look at some of the latest tools to keep you in touch such as IRC, AIM, ICQ
and any other three letter acronym we can dig up." Happy Noel will be co-leading this
session.
Where's the Internet Headed by Jim
Massey Jim spent almost the entire month of April at one conference or another. He'll
share his unique viewpoint at where he thinks we're headed in the next six to twelve
months.
Getting Organized for the Rainbow Gathering led by MJ Greenberg. Michael is the US organizer for the
international Rainbow Gathering in Australia later this year. He'll explore ideas for
sponsorship & transportation arrangements for more than 2,000 people who are expected
to attend from the USA.
SIGs for April 21
Wednesday Night Community VC led by Eric
Gersh. This SIG will discuss the feasibility of forming a "VC" group for
small, particularly community oriented, internet businesses. We would raise small amounts
of capital to fund first stage net businesses that have gone through a sort of Wednesday
night community filter. The concept is akin to the mini-banks set up to make micro-loans.

BEYOND INTERACTIVE: REFLEXIVE ENTERTAINMENT led by Linda Thurman of New Media Prime. Linda
writes -- Are you ready to flex? A "flex" is an original universe designed for
the viewser's (viewer-user) enjoyment by the producer (designer-writer-programmer). The
viewser's input, choices and actions impact the universe and create a new universe --
never exactly what the producer foresaw or the viewer intends.

INTERNET ENGINEERING REQUIREMENTS led by Joe Andrieu. The group will explore how
Business Requirements fit into the planning for a successful Internet project. How does
one identify and document the needs and success criteria as they relate to the business
functions of the company? Marketing, financial, fulfillment, customer support, legal,
etc., all of these must be addressed for a fully defined Internet initiative. Uniquely
separate from Technology and Design requirements, Business Requirements ensure that the
project, once built, will in fact serve the company and improve the bottom line.

JAVA SERVLETS DEMO led by James Pitts. James writes: "Yes, Java can do
more than annoy us with choppy animations and endless coffee analogies. Server-side Java
applets have been around for a while, but Servlets are now a standard part of Sun's Java.
You can hook them up to databases and make cool web apps such as a bulletin board. We will
look at some Servlets in action and discuss whether this is an effective way to make
dynamic web sites without causing the developer to lose too much sleep."

company is a cooperative venture of the SIG participants and those who contribute their
efforts to developing the online world.

generalized predictions about future ecommerce business models considering new tools (XML
